Organizational / Leadership Development
A Promotion Alone Does Not Guarantee An Individual Success as a Leader
Regularly, organizations promote technically or tactically competent individual contributors to the role of supervisor or manager as a reward for their hard work. The misconception is, if this person has been effective in his/her technical role, they should be able to coach others in the department to the same level.
A promotion alone does not guarantee an individual success as a group or team leader. According the industry research, with no formal intervention such as coaching or leadership development, it can take 24-60 months for an individual contributor to fully develop into an effective leader for the organization. Most often, this newly promoted manager acts as a “player coach.” They, continue to perform at the level of the individual, technical consultant and “manage” the team for a minimal performance or short term goals.
Without any formal intervention existing frontline supervisors and managers may, over time, gain traction into some semblance of leadership effectiveness yet still be missing key skills or behaviors that make the difference between derailment and success in their tenure.
