Team Effectiveness
Why is it so hard to build & maintain effective teams?
Teams by their very nature are inherently dysfunctional. They are made up of individuals, each bringing different styles, needs, motivations and expectations to the table. These differences can be a strength when members work together, each submitting their specialty for collaboration. However, when team members use these differences to work for individual agendas instead of team goals, it creates conflict, and a loss of productivity.
Unfortunately, the second scenario is much more natural than the first, which makes it tough to build and maintain effective teams. Research on the effectiveness of teams all share similar points of view on what makes an effective team. The most distinguishing characteristic of a team is its members have, as their highest priority, the accomplishment of team goals.
Attributes of Highly Functioning and Effective Team Environments
There are attributes in highly functioning and effective team environments that make a difference, despite individuality:
Established Methods - The team has agreed on the methods and processes they will use to work effectively together. These methods include how they will meet, share information, resolve conflict, solve problems and monitor their progress towards their stated objectives.
Existence of Trust - The relationships in the team are built on trust. All team members value and understand the contributions of others and together all team members support and encourage each other to be effective individually and collectively.
Supportive Culture and Environment - The team operates in an environment that is open, participatory and collaborative. The culture of the team encourages the unique expression of each team member and releases the full creativity of the individuals of the team. The team celebrates its successes and works together to stay inspired and challenged in working towards their goals.
Focus on Achievement - The team has a shared vision and has stated its team goals so all team members understand them and are committed to achieving them. The roles and responsibilities each team member has to contribute to the achievement of these goals are understood. The team is involved in making the decisions collectively on how they will focus and apply their energies towards these achievements.
